[ Story ]

Director/screenwriter Sai Yoichi and screenwriter Kudo Kankuro have created a live action period piece based on the internationally famous classic Ninja comic by Shirato Sampei. From amidst the massive body of original works, ‘Sugaru no shima' was chosen in order to portray the fierce escape of the young Kamui from the Ninja world in the hopes of seeking his own freedom. The superb cast members challenged themselves physically for their roles, which include difficult wire moves and sword-fighting action.
Kamui (Matsuyama Kenichi), born in the 17th century in the lower classes of society, became a Ninja in order to survive. Eventually unable to bear the restrictive rules and brutality, he eventually opted to flee from his responsibilities. Known as an escaped Ninja, he became a fugitive on the run from his own former clan. He was invited to the home of fisherman Hanbei (Kobayashi Kaoru) after saving his life. Hanbei's wife Sugaru (Koyuki), however—herself an escaped Ninja as well—viewed Kamui as a pursuer, and therefore was unable to trust him. Meanwhile, Hanbei's daughter Sayaka (Ohgo Suzuka) finds herself falling in love with him.
