A modern remake of Kudo Eiichi's 1963 period movie of the same title. In his trademark over-the-top-style, Miike Takashi delivers relentless violence, as the thirteen samurai take on an army of 300 in the last battle scene which runs for a whopping fifty minutes. The film was selected in competition at the Venice International Film Festival. Shimada Shinzaemon (Yakusho Koji) receives orders to assassinate a tyrant lord, so he summons assassin samurai to plan an ambush attack. But the famous swordsman Kito Hanbei (Ichimura Masachika), the tyrant's right-hand man, soon hears of the plan...
