[ Story ]

When her husband loses his job in the coal mine, Fumiko (Nobuko Otowa) is not too put out. Taking her daughter Kimiko (Eiko Yamagishi) she sets out to make a living in Kyoto where, she has heard, there are jobs open for women.
She finds one for herself and for her daughter, working as hostesses in a sleazy cabaret. And it does not take her long to discover that the way to really make money is to get the customers to give it to her. With this in mind she coaches her daughter - who soon has an admirer.
This is Gombei (Hideo Kanze), a rich and not too bright farmer. After one night with the daughter he is wild to marry her. Since mother will not allow this, he lavishes presents on the pair and soon they are rolling in money.
But Fumiko has not counted on Gombei's strong-minded mother. She has Kimiko arrested as a prostitute, and the furious Gombei attacks and slightly wounds Fumiko. Taking advantage of this, the mother decides to sue.
She wins too, but her triumph is poisoned by troubles back home where her husband (Taiji Tonoyama) is accused of having seduced the mentally retarded daughter of one of the local assemblymen. Fumiko goes to her husband's aid and savagely denies the rumors, which happen to be quite true. Then she and her daughter are off again - off on their way to make their fortunes.
