It is about one hundred years ago and near midnight. The la ne is deserted, when Iemon Tamiya kills Samon Yotsuya, the father of Oiwa, his sweetheart, who has forced Iemon to separate from his daughter. Iemon then brings Oiwa to Edo on the pretext of revenging her father, but being unable to find work treats her harshly. By a strange coincidence Iemon then becomes acquainted with Oume, daughter of a rich dealer who wishes to marry him unaware that he has Oiwa. On his bridal night with Oume after poisoning Oiwa, the ghost of his former wife appears, and Iemon kills Oume and her family goaded possessed by the desperate spirit of Oiwa. Gradually he becomes mad, and Oiwa's sister finally revenges herself upon him.
