[ Story ]

Young and beautiful Matsuko (Shima Iwashita) lives alone with her father (Masayuki Mori) in old Kamakura. Her mother (Yoshiko Kuga) has long deserted them in order to live with a younger man. Though Matsuko herself has experienced love - just once, with Munehiro (Jin Nakayama), who married another girl - she is content to live an uneventful life with her remaining parent.
Then one day she meets again Munehiro who is convalescing from a serious illness, discovers that he still loves her and wants to continue their affair. The situation is complicated by the jealousy of his wife and by the fact that his younger brother Koji (Koji Ishizaka) has come to care for Matsuko.
The difficulties resolve themselves. Her father dies and, later, Munehiro, despondent over his illness, kills himself. She is now free and is drawn toward Koji.
At the same time, however, she realizes the complications and responsibilities of love. Having learned so much, she no longer feels equal to the demands of her emotions.
