Anime adaptation of Kuroyanagi Tetsuko's same-named autobiographical novel about her youth, which has been translated into over 20 languages and sold 25 million copies worldwide.
Japan is in the final years of World War Two. Totto-chan (Ono Liliana) gets kicked out of grade school for unruly behavior and enrolls in Tomoe Gakuen, an unusual school housed in a train car. Totto-chan grows into a bright and energetic girl under the unique educational approach espoused by principal Kobayashi (Yakusho Koji).
