[ Story ]
A biographical drama portraying the life of Tomeoka Kosuke, a philanthropist who devoted his life to the reform of delinquent youths during the Meiji Period. It touches on his way of life, and how his pain at seeing children driven to commit crimes after being starved to affection led him to establish juvenile reform schools in Tokyo and Hokkaido. Kosuke (Murakami Hiroaki), who was adopted by a merchant soon after his birth, gets into a fight with the son of a wealthy samurai family and is angered by the outrageousness of class society. He eventually becomes a Christian priest and moves to Hokkaido with his wife Natsuko (Kudo Yuki) and his children to take a position as a prison chaplain.
