A documentary about the Hakkoda Mountains disaster that claimed the lives of numerous Imperial Japanese Army soldiers on a marching expedition, which later inspired the movie Mount Hakkoda. Based on the non-fiction novel "Hakkoda Renho Fubuki no Sangeki" (A Tragic Blizzard in the Hakkoda Mountains) by Ogawasawara Koshu, it uses a mix of dramatic recreations and interviews with survivors to tell the full story.
In 1902 on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, Imperial Japanese Army soldiers set off on a snowbound marching expedition through the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori Prefecture. However, a massive cold wave, the worst in several centuries, generated unpredictably harsh weather conditions, and the expedition lost its way. The result was a mountaineering catastrophe that took the lives of 199 soldiers...
