A sequel to the "Chushingura" story that usually ends with the suicides of the forty-seven samurai, the film features two splendid actors, Yakusho Koji who starred in 13 Assassins (Jusannin no Shikaku), and Sato Koichi, who starred in Nobody to Watch Over Me (Daremo Mamotte Kurenai). Paying special attention to authenticity, the work is notable for its single-camera location shots of weighty length. Kichiemon (Sato) was unable to die an honorable death, whilst Magozaemon (Yakusho) disappeared the night before the raid. Sixteen years later, the two reunite. They had both received secret orders to stay alive from Oishi Kuranosuke (Kataoka Nizaemon).
