[ Story ]
A quick-moving yarn that follows the exploits of a zany cast of characters living in an old Osaka boarding house. The film's unique stylings are said to have angered IBUSE Masuji, the author of the novel it was originally based on; Kawashima, meanwhile, remained fond of the work, which he described as a "cry" aimed at highlighting the sorrow of all those forced to live in a state of vulgarity. Something of Kawashima's own philosophy is reflected in protagonist Goro (Frankie SAKAI), a self-described "good-for-nothing oddball" who runs away at the end of the film, injecting a somber air into this otherwise whimsical ensemble drama.
