Despite growing up in a difficult family situation, Maiko manages to live up to her grandmother's hopes and fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.
One day, one of her students, Akiko, receives a letter. The sender claims to be Akiko's future self, 20 years in the future.
Putting her doubts aside, she begins to engage in correspondence about her sadness at losing her father, her emotionally walled-off mother, and her daily battles with loneliness, but finds herself forced to deal with more relentless adversities: the domestic violence her mother suffers at the hands of her new boyfriend, brutal bullying, and stunning revelations. Thrust into the depths of despair, Akiko and her only true friend Arisa come up with a drastic, murderous solution.
In a desperate attempt to save Akiko, Maiko comes up against cruel realities and social injustices which threaten to drag her down as well, yet she continues to do all she can to extend a helping hand...
As fate's merciless grasp seems inescapable, will letters from Akiko's future self guide her toward a brighter path, or lead her deeper into misery...?
