[ Story ]
The members of the Haruno family live together in a small mountain village, and are each burdened with their own particular problems. Eldest son, Hajime, is distraught when the object of his affections transfers to another school, but soon falls in love again with new student, Aoi (Tsuchiya Anna). Youngest daughter, Sachiko (Banno Maya), a first year elementary school student, is troubled by a giant doppelganger that roams around the town. Mother and former animator, Yoshiko (Tezuka Satomi), is attempting a comeback under the guidance of their eccentric grandfather (Gashuin Tatsuya). Consequently, her neglected husband Nobuo (Miura Tomokazu), a hypnotist, becomes bored with his life. This dysfunctional family is eventually brought together again by a picture in the grandfather's sketchbook. Rain spells the end of spring and the beginning of summer, and as a blazing red sunset spreads across the sky, the Harunos take in the scenery together as they sip their tea.
This quirky tour-de-force from director Ishii Katsuhito (Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl, Party 7) was the opening film for the 2004 Cannes Film Festival Directors' Fortnight.
