[ Story ]
A young Afghan girl who has lost her male relatives to war disguises herself as a boy and sets off in search of work. "If the Taliban find out, they'll kill me." Cowering in fear of what could happen to her, she offers a mistaken prayer during an all-male religious service. Her cover is finally blown when the boys of the town are summoned to a madrasah, and as a consequence, she is severely punished. Rivulets of blood trickle down to her feet; sheer terror has caused the onset of her first menstruation. A teacher from the madrasah frees her from jail, and says he will make her his wife. We witness her transformation from girl to boy, and finally woman, as she is freed from one prison only to find herself living in another. This is the story of a girl living under the oppressive reign of the Taliban, set amidst the war-ravaged streets of Kabul.
Winner of several international awards including the Camera d'or (Golden Camera) Special Mention for best first film at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
