[ Story ]

A live-action adaptation of a historical novel by Ubukata Tow that won numerous prizes including the Honya Taisho award. It traces the achievements of Yasui Santetsu, who devised a calendar unique to Japan in the early Edo period and later took the name Shibukawa Harumi. Its director is Takita Yojiro, winner of a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award for Departures.
Santetsu (Okada Junichi), the scion of a family of Go masters, is more devoted to arithmetic and astronomical observation than playing the game. This brings him to the attention of Aizu clan lord Hoshina Masayuki (Matsumoto Koshiro), who orders him to revise a calendar developed in China that has declined in accuracy after 800 years of use.
