A documentary that follows fourteen years in the life of a young woman who has ceased to attend school. It offers an insight into the inner struggles of the estimated 120,000 children of elementary and junior high school age around Japan who have stopped going to school.
Ai had a carefree upbringing in Takagi Village in Shimoina County, Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by its magnificent natural environment through which the Tenryu River flows. However, she stopped attending elementary school soon after enrollment. Her mother is clearly troubled by this, but continues to provide her daughter with emotional support. Eventually, Ai finds a place where she feels she belongs, and gradually rebuilds her confidence.
