[ Story ]
The life of Bunzaemon Kinokuniya, a merchant of feudal Japan is legendary to the Japanese, and this film covers the early days of his career from the time he sacrifices himself for others until the day he again proves himself against tremendous odds.
The sacrifice occurs when the merchants of Wakayama are suspected of conspiring to smuggle in arms against the Shogunate government. Kinokuniya, in a great spirit of unselfishness, offers to give himself up as the leader to appease the authorities and is committed to prison.
Upon gaining his freedom several years later, Kinokuniya returns home, only to find that the merchants he assisted have banded together, led by the greedy Nankaiya, to take over his interests.
With the aid of lovely Okayo, the undaunted merchant battles the greed of men and the fury of the elements to carry a valuable cargo of oranges to Edo, an amazing achievement in those days. In this way, Kinokuniya revives the glory of his name and wins the woman he loves.
