[ Story ]

Japanese life during the past thirty-five turbulent years is depicted in this film through the eyes of two police detectives. One is Hemmi, who comes to Tokyo in 1926 from faraway Kagoshima to join the Tokyo police force. His closest friend is Nihei, a farmer's son from Tohoku who becomes the steadying influence on headstrong Hemmi.
After sometime the two policemen are transferred to the plain clothes branch and prove themselves by solving several important cases. Then the two friends take brides who soon learn what it means to be a detective's wife. In the following year, Hemmi's wife bears him a son, Ryushiro, but her health begins to fail. Nihei, however, is more fortunate in having a healthy family.
Hemmi's wife dies while he is on an assignment, and when World War II breaks out, he collapses from overwork. He dies, recognized as an outstanding detective but has suffered from the realization of neglect of his family and home. Nihei continues in the service and looks after Hemmi's son who also grows up to become a first-class detective.
When he receives an award for long service, Nihei goes to Hemmi's grave and reflects upon the past.
