A newcomer - a handsome young man named Shunji - brings a sensation to the young female workers in the toy manufacturing company. He wants to supply children with toys that give children dreams. He asks a charming illustrator named Mari to cooperate: to create the lovable face of a doll - a face so charming that it warms every heart. Her smile strikes him - it's the face that he's been looking for.
However, a doll with Mari's face is not manufactured – the chief says children prefer toy monsters to the doll. What's more, he calls Shunji a murderer. The truth is this: he used to be a promising jazz pianist, but his future was shattered when he caused a traffic accident killing his sweetheart. Shunji presents Mari with a beautiful song titled "Whispering Young Leaves" before he quits the company.
The president of the toy company, however, is touched by the doll with Mari's face. He orders mass production of the doll and wants Shunji back. The young man is missing.
In order to find Shunji, Mari sings Shunji's song on TV. Shunji hears it in a nursery school run by Takako, his late sweetheart's sister.
However, he has no intention of returning to the toy company. He is determined to live in the nursery school with Takako taking care of the children who prefer dolls with Mari's face to toy monsters.
