[ Story ]
When it comes time to redecorate the elaborate Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, the artist Shunga Kano is asked to supervise the work. Now old and dissipated he feels he is not up to the task, and turns it over to a disciple, Choshun Miyagawa.
Choshun, not content with imitating the Chinese work of the original, designs a new scheme of decoration with Kano which is considered so beautiful that Choshun finds himself a famous artist.
Now jealous, Kano refuses to pay the artist when he comes to receive his money. Rather, he has him beaten up, his fingers cut off, and leaves him for dead.
When Choshun does not return, his daughter, Okyo, is worried and she and several of his assistants call on Kano but are told that Choshun has already left. They discover her father, however, who is still alive.
Okyo returns to demand an explanation from Kano but is herself attacked. Though she screams and attempts to flee, Kano's men cut at her with their swords, and then ravish her while the newly decorated walls and statues in the Shrine remain deaf and blind to her pleas.
