[ Story ]
In the northern province, two waitresses Mieko and Hanako from Tokyo, are missing somewhere near the River Kitakami. At night, the villagers of Shirayama gather round a blazing fire, and utter incantations while an old headman tempers a sword. The missing Mieko and Hanako have been killed and hang head downwards from the bough of a tree, their blood dripping into large vessel. The police find ninety-eight swords in a secret underground room and the skeletons of eighteen girls near the top of a mountain. The headman of the village tells the people that their ancestors swore to their tutelary god to present offerings of ninety-nine swords tempered with the blood of virgins and the ninety-ninth sword is still untampered. As the law advances in force the villagers kidnap Kanako, daughter of the chief of police, to temper the ninety-ninth sword. Kanako is strung head downwards from a tree…
