[ Story ]
Maxim Gorky's play of the same name is the basis for this solid drama in which the story has been transplanted to an Edo tenement house. It is written, directed, and produced by Kurosawa Akira.
Dwelling in a tenement house at the end of the Edo period are people who are self-indulgent but full of vitality. Among them is a thief, Sutekichi, who has been involved in an affair with the landlord's wife, but he is really in love with her younger sister Okayo. One day, an elderly man on a pilgrimage appears at the tenement and preaches enlightenment to people. There are those who agree with him, and the atmosphere in the tenement begins to change.
