[ Story ]

Mizoguchi's quintessential tale of tragic love, based on a classic play by Edo-period dramatist CHIKAMATSU Monzaemon. In seventeenth-century Kyoto, Mohei, the apprentice of a wealthy scroll maker, forges a receipt to help his master's young wife, Osan, who is in dire straits. Falsely accused of carrying on an illicit relationship, they go on the lam, whereupon they realize their true love for one another. As they are eventually paraded to the gallows, onlookers remark upon how serene and happy they look. The film's themes of patriarchal and class-based oppression continue to resonate to this day. Cinematographer MIYAGAWA Kazuo, a frequent collaborator with Mizoguchi, evocatively captures the fated lovers' reflection against the glistening lake surface.
