[ Story ]

Shindo's celebrated work poetically depicting the struggle between man and nature. The film portrays the daily lives of a middle-aged couple and their young sons on a remote island as they cultivate the barren land, fetch water in a rowboat, and contend with steep terrain. Their life of meager means is dealt a tragic blow when their eldest son suddenly falls ill. Featuring only a small cast and very little in the way of spoken dialogue, the film derives much of its emotional heft from its powerful images and sound. The recipient of the Grand Prix at the 2nd Moscow International Film Festival, it was released independently by Shindo's own Kindai Eiga Kyokai, having been made by a production team of only thirteen people.
