Samurai Hustle and Samurai Shifters screenplay writer Dobashi Akihiro adapts his own same-named novel for this samurai period comedy.
The much-hated Kira Kozukenosuke is stabbed to death in Edo Castle. With their very survival on the line, the Kira clan tries tricking the Shogunate into believing that Kozukenosuke is still alive by passing off his look-alike younger brother monk Takaaki (Muro Tsuyoshi) in his stead. Meanwhile, Oishi Kuranosuke (Nagayama Eita) is a retainer to the Ako clan leader who committed ritual suicide after stabbing Kozukenosuke. Oishi should be plotting to avenge his master's death, but instead he colludes with Takaaki.
