[ Story ]
A period love story directed by Kumai Kei, who made a loyal adaptation of a script left behind by the late Kurosawa Akira. Oshin (Tono Nagiko) works in a brothel in Fukagawa, Edo. One night she falls in love with a young samurai (Yoshioka Hidetaka), who is on the run after injuring someone in a fight. Noticing her dedication, Oshin's "sisters" want to encourage her love, but the young samurai has absolutely no intention to make Oshin his wife, and merely sees her as a kind of sister. Oshin is so hurt she falls ill, but then an enigmatic man named Ryosuke (Nagase Masatoshi) appears on the scene. Born under the same unfortunate circumstances, they take a liking to each other. Then one day, the entire Fukagawa quarter is hit by a big flood, and Kikuno (Shimizu Misa), who was left in charge of the house by the female owner, fails to get herself and the other women out in time. At that moment, Kikuno's pimp, Ginji (Okuda Eiji), comes to steal money and Ryosuke ends up killing him. Kikuno and the others allow Ryosuke to escape, but they themselves are trapped and in the end are driven all the way up to the roof. Ryosuke appears with a small boat to save them, but only three people will fit in the boat, so Kikuno chooses to stay behind on the roof.
