[ Story ]
A documentary that follows Iida Susumu, who continues vigorous activity in his late 80s, writing accounts of World War II and running a welfare facility for children with disabilities. Exhausting body and soul on the brutal New Guinea front in the the WWII, Iida was convicted as a Class B/C war criminal and sent to Sugamo Prison in Tokyo. With his entire youth spent on the battlefield and in prison, he describes extreme hardship that no one but those who experienced it can truly imagine. After his release from prison, his first son was born with birth defects, a victim of thalidomide, and the welfare of children with disabilities became the other focus of Iida's life. The film brings into sharp relief the earnest intensity of Iida's desire to pass on to the next generation his story of living on the dark side of the Showa era (1926–1989). The young film crew, led by director-editor Ito Yoshiaki, decided to make the documentary after being inspired by Iida's character, despite the gap in age of more than half-a-century. With both respect and frankness, they depict his efforts to confront these problems head-on.
