The ninth work of the "Cinema Kabuki" series. "Botan Doro (The Peony Lantern)" is a ghost story which won fame as the rakugo comic storytelling act of Sanyutei Encho. This film, however, picks up the stage performance at Kabuki-za in October 2007. The script adapted by Onishi Nobuyuki in 1974 is being used, while taking the format of the original author's storytelling on stage sitting on a dias called a koza. Otsuyu (Nakamura Shichinosuke) falls seriously ill and dies from falling in love with a masterless samurai of a different class, Hagiwara Shinzaburo (Kataoka Ainosuke). She, however, now appears at Shinzaburo's house as a ghost.
