The anime version of a science fiction novel by popular writer Kyogoku Natsuhiko, for which he held a contest for readers to decide the setting. Intrigued by a mysterious series of murders, a group of girls in the near future begin to turn their gaze towards the outside world. Known for his screenplay of "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex," Director Fujisaku Junichi paints a picture of the eerie side of a surveillance society. Set in a Japan several decades from now in which the school system has been abolished, 14-year-old Hazuki (voice: Oki Kanae) and her group of friends study on their own with hand-held devices and enjoy meeting with their classmates once a week -- but in a society that is supposed to be controlled from top to bottom, the children's lives are suddenly put in harm's way...
