In a dark, cramped underground world of tunnels, Patema goes into ‘the danger zone' and finds a vast open space filled with a ghostly reflected light.Meanwhile above ground, Age is not a good fit with his land of ‘Aiga', ruled by the tyrant Izamura, where students like Age are brainwashed against ‘the sinners who fell into the sky'. Age, though, sometimes slips out of his dormitory to look up into the forbidden sky and
think about his vanished father. Patema senses she is being watched. Looking up, she sees an upside-down ‘bat person'. Fleeing, she falls into the void below her. Age, looking up at the sky, sees a rucksack floating upside-down in mid-air, its strap caught on the barbed wire. Patema has been caught on some tree branches, but below her is only sky. She inches toward her rucksack, hanging onto a fence that points down below her. Now Age sees a girl, climbing upside-down slowly up the fence. Each upside-down to the other, they stare, too astonished to speak...
