[ Story ]

A human drama which portrays a young samurai who comes to the city of Edo (current Tokyo) to take revenge for his father, but ends up re-contemplating the meaning of life through interaction with people. An endearing period drama filled with laughter and tears is vividly created by Kore-eda Hirokazu of Nobody Knows (Dare mo Shiranai), a film which he directed and which brought the Best Actor Award to the youngest actor at the Cannes Film Festival.
Revenge killing was the norm in 1702 when Sozaemon (Okada Junichi), a country samurai, comes to Edo from Matsumoto to avenge himself on Kanazawa Jubei (Asano Tadanobu) for killing his father. However, it takes longer than expected to find Kanazawa, and Sozaemon decides to take residence at a tenement to take the time to search. He meets people with colorful personalities at the tenement, including a beautiful widow, Osae (Miyazawa Rie). They live happily despite being poor, and Sozaemon realizes the existence of life without revenge. Sozaemon locates Kanazawa by luck, but he cannot kill him. Instead, he finds a way to keep his honor as a samurai without taking revenge.
