Film adaptation of the period novel by Miyagi Ayako, who won the Grand Prize and Reader's Prize in the 2006 By Women For Women R-18 Literary Prize. Sensual depiction of the tragic love of a courtesan at the end of the Edo Period that incorporates the gorgeous costumes of the high-class "oiran" geishas and the conventions of brothels.
Asagiri (Adachi Yumi), a popular courtesan in Yoshiwara, has one year remaining in her term for indentured service. She handles her work with equanimity, but one day while out she meets textile artisan Hanjiro (Fuchikami Yasushi). She is attracted to the honorable Hanjiro, but as a courtesan she is prohibited from having a lover…
