[ Story ]

A film adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same title by Yamada Muneki, directed by Nakashiima Tetsuya of Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma Monogatari). Racing through her roller-coaster way of life, the story dramatically portrays a woman who believes in happiness with the person she loves. Matsuko's wretched life is told in a style of a musical with songs. A fantastic world has been created, making full use of pop costumes and over 400 cuts of CG and animation.
Kawajiri Matsuko (Nakatani Miki) is a single woman who was born in Onoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1947 and dreams of being married to someone she loves. She stays on an elite course, but because she is fired as a teacher, her life starts going downhill. Matsuko dreams of a happy life with a man, but in reality, she always ends up being betrayed. Her live-in partner commits suicide; she gets ditched by her adulterous partner; and she ends up being sent to prison for killing her pimp. And yet Matsuko keeps on dreaming of happiness with someone she loves. Her humble wish does not come true, however, as her life comes to an abrupt end when she is murdered.
