[ Story ]

A classic, gothic romance directed by Kurosawa Kiyoshi, his first foreign-language film. Handsome imagery weaves a tale of the tragedy invited by the oldest method of photography, daguerrotype. The cast includes Tahar Rahim of A Prophet among other famed European actors.
Jean (Rahim), the assistant to a photographer, becomes attracted to the photographer's daughter, Marie (Constance Rousseau), through her work modeling for daguerrotype photographs. Jean attempts to take Marie away, but little by little, their fates go awry.
