[ Story ]

When Chiaki Ezawa returns home after graduating from a Tokyo school, she finds her father's pearl business taken over by a former clerk. Her father strongly opposes her friendship with Ryuichi Satake, a research worker at the Pearl Institute. She then returns to Tokyo in search of work and to find her mother who abandoned her soon after her birth.
One day Chiaki is saved from danger by a bar proprietress, Shinko, who informs her that her mother, Minako, is now in Hokkaido. Chiaki meets her mother for the first time, but Minako acts indifferently toward her. Returning to Tokyo, Chiaki starts to work at a charm school.
Meanwhile, Ryuichi has been transferred to Tokyo but fate does not permit Chiaki to meet him as he is sent to Okinawa.
Disaster now strikes her father and Ikejiri of the charm school offers financial help if she will marry him. Chiaki is torn between love for Ryuichi and duty to her family. In desperation, she makes an unsuccessful attempt at suicide.
Her mother, Minako, rushes to her side and tells her to go to Ryuichi.
