[ Story ]
When fighting breaks out in Shanghai in 1933, Sadako's sweetheart Takashi and landowner Heizaemon's son, Heibei, are drafted. Heibei is wounded and returns home. One day he forces Sadako to yield to him. Sadako tries to drown herself but is saved. When Takashi returns and hears what has happened, he leaves the village.
Twelve years pass. Sadako has married Heibei but is cold towards her husband. They have three children, Eiichi, Morito and Naoko .
When the children grow up Eiichi commits suicide, Sadako helps her daughter Naoko to elope with Takashi's son, Yutaka, and Morito is sought by the police. Heibei is bitter, knowing that Sadako has never forgotten Takashi.
It is only when Takashi is on his death bed that Heibei and Sadako find peace at last after thirty years of suffering in which they have both loved and hated each other.
