[ Story ]
During the early years of the century, Kotaro Takamura, a young artist, returned to Japan after having studied in France, and met a girl named Chieko, the daughter of a wealthy brewer. The marriage is not easy to arrange because Kotaro's father, a proud man, does not take to the idea of a brewer's daughter. Finally, however, they marry and are happy for a time, he busy with his own work, she taking up painting. When a selection jury turns down one of her pictures, however, she decides to paint no more and takes up weaving. About the same time, her own father is killed and this seriously deranges her. She tries to commit suicide, and later begins to behave irrationally. The doctors tell Kotaro that she is suffering from a severe mental disease. He does everything he can to help her; neglects his own work to nurse her, but she must go to hospital. He brings her colored paper so that she can cut fanciful designs, but knows there is no hope. Finally, she dies of pneumonia, and the faithful Kotaro is left to face life alone.
