During the last days of the Second World War, Lt. Arisaka is assigned to a small station near the Manchurian-Korean border. The place is a bedlam, under constant attack, the guerrillas have taken the guns, and one of the soldiers has deserted.
Hunting for the guerrillas they come upon two women, one a lady doctor, Kurayoshi Mami, the other, a girl named Mitsuko who are caring for the wounded man, Private Oka, who deserted. Unable to operate without her instruments, Dr. Kurayoshi goes back into the village is captured by the guerrillas but the lieutenant saves her.
In the meantime, the war has ended, though the guerrillas are as fierce as ever. Now Arisaka learns that the last repatriation train is about to leave from Chongjin.
However, just as the train steams into the station, it is blown up by the guerrillas. Then Arisaka notices a rusty freight-train on a side track and he and the soldiers work feverishly to put it into running shape. Fuel is still a problem but finally, Arisaka manages to solve that too, the train begins to move and Arisaka and his friends are on their way to freedom and Japan.
