It is the end of the Sengoku period. In Tatara Village deep in the mountains of Izumo, Tatara blowing is secret method for making high-quality iron that is touted to be "rust resistant for a millennium." Gosuke (Aoyagi Sho) is heir to the iron-making technique and is fated to protect the tradition, but one day he learns that the era has arrived when even farmers can become samurai. He turns his back on village propriety and embarks on a journey to join the samurai ranks, but a harsh reality awaits him.
