The first of a two-part ninja action series depicting the elaborate espionage campaign occurring behind the scenes of the 'Toba-Fushimi Battle'. At the helm is Yamaguchi Yoshitaka who worked as an assistant director to Miike Takashi before making his directorial debut with Arcana.
At the end of the Edo Period which brought the era of the samurai to a close, Ryu (Kanichiro) is the descendant of a "genin", the lowest-rank in ninja hierarchy. Due to such a low rank, he lives a miserable existence. Then a secret order is received from Katsu Kaishu bidding for the recovery of princess Shizuka (Yamaguchi Mayu), a Satsuma native, from the home of a prominent vassal in Edo.
