[ Story ]

Tokiko (Tanaka Kinuyo) lives in a rental with her young son Hiroshi and awaits her husband Shuichi's (Sano Shuji) return from the warfront. She brings kimono one by one to her trusted friend Akiko (Miyake Kuniko), who sells them to her neighbor Orie (Murata Chieko). During one visit, Orie comments that Tokiko is pretty and needn't work as a seamstress if she used her looks. That day Tokiko returns home to find Hiroshi with a sudden fever and rushes to a nearby hospital in a panic. Hiroshi has acute intestinal catarrh. His life is somehow saved through multiple injections, but next she faces the hospital bill. She is helpless. Tokiko finds herself visiting Orie, and then a disreputable house in Tsukishima where she spends time with a man she's never met before. Several days later, Hiroshi is released from the hospital. Akiko is shocked to find out about Tokiko's actions from Orie and rebukes her. She wants to know why Tokiko didn't ask her for help, but Tokiko didn't want to trouble the impoverished Akiko. Yet, what kind of foolishness has she done? Tokiko is now distressed by the magnitude of her error. One day, her husband Shuichi suddenly returns home. He learns that Hiroshi was recently ill and asks about the bill, but Tokiko is stricken and can't reply. Shuichi is suspicious and presses her, and Tokito tells him everything.
