Ishiguro Kazuo's debut novel has been adapted for the screen by director Ishikawa Kei, known for films such as Gukoroku: Traces of Sin and A Man.
Niki (Camilla Aiko), a university dropout with the ambition of becoming a writer, decides to turn her mother Etsuko's (Yoshida Yoh) life story into a work of fiction. Etsuko had moved from Nagasaki, Japan to England. For the first time, she hears about memories from her past that Etsuko has kept secret. It was a tale of a summer spent in post-war Nagasaki, a vibrant city during the post-war reconstruction period, when a young Etsuko (Hirose Suzu) shared her days with a woman named Sachiko (Nikaido Fumi) and her young daughter.
