Academy nominated film for the Makeup And Hairstyling, this adaptation of Yoshida Shuichi's same named novel about the life and art of kabuki actor became the highest grossing Japanese live action film in the Japanese box office history.
Kikuo (Yoshizawa Ryo) was born into a yakuza family, but taken in by famed Kabuki leader Hanjiro (Watanabe Ken) after the death of his father. Kikuo meets Hanjiro's son Shunsuke (Yokohama Ryusei), who becomes his best friend and rival as they devote their youths to kabuki.
