[ Story ]
Feature-length debut of Kimura Takeo at 90 years old, who has supported production design in Japanese films for many years including Itami Juzo's Tampopo and Suzuki Seijun's Fighting Elegy. The film sensitively portrays the mind-set of a generation with war-time experience and their ties to the younger generation.
Kimuro So (Nagato Hiroyuki) has recently taken up the position as Dean of NK Visual Arts of Academy when he is approached by one of the students, Murakami Daisuke (Inoue Yoshio). Daisuke shows Kimuro a tattoo of Marilyn Monroe on his arm and refers to her as his beloved, which reminds Kimuro of his youth. Kimuro remembers a woman (Miyazawa Rie) with a baby who ran a small bar in the night-life district after the war. As well, he recalls a demobilized veteran with an artificial foot, and the youths who flocked to the bars. Kimuro's wife, Emiko (Arima Ineko), who awaits him at home also has painful memories of the war. She suffers from ill health and dementia. Daisuke continues writing to Kimuro after quitting school. Daisuke hints that he might take his own life, and in fact he does so before too long. Kimuro learns more about him from a letter from his mother (Momoi Kaori) and weeps for the loss of his talent and young life.
