[ Story ]

The second feature film from director Kimura Takeo, who after almost 70 years serving the Japanese film industry as an art director entered the Guiness World Records in 2008 for making his feature film directing debut at the age of 90. Golden Flower is an imaginatively filmed story depicting the spiritual journey of an aging botanist and the lives of his fellow senior citizens home residents. Led by Harada Yoshio, the ensemble of veteran actors give rich performances rooted in long careers.
"Yokuyoso" senior citizens' home resident Maki (Harada) has devoted the better part of his life to botanical research. Together with the home's unique inhabitants, including a physicist (Shinjitsu Ichiro), an actor (Kawazu Yusuke) and self-styled silver screen star Granny Onao (Sanjo Miki), Maki's curious days are filled with a mix of dreams and reality. When Maki's 80th birthday finally arrives, he goes on a trek with a staff member to harvest some Japanese yams. After happening upon a natural spring, he discovers the everlasting "golden flower" he's long been searching for. From that day on, the long buried memories of Maki's youth flood back. Going against the forward march of time, he sets out on the final journey of his life.
