[ Story ]
A remake of Kurosawa Akira's film of the same title which was released in Japan in 1958. The original screenplay, which also influenced George Lucas's Star Wars series, was adapted by playwright and novelist, Nakashima Kazuki, bringing new life to the 1958 version. The film was premiered at the University of Southern California from where George Lucas graduated.
Set in the age of provincial wars in Japan. The province of Yamana invades the neighboring small province of Akizuki to expand. Akizuki is taken by the overwhelming force of Yamana, however, princess Yuki (Nagasawa Masami) along with Akizuki's enormous war fund have already vanished from the castle. The hidden war fund is found by chance by Takezo (Matsumoto Jun), a gold miner, and Shinpachi (Miyagawa Daisuke), a woodcutter, but it is seized by a burglar Makabe Rokurota (Abe Hiroshi) and his brother. Takezo and Shinpachi offer to help Rokurota to cross enemy territory to reach an ally for a fee. The three men and princess Yuki, disguised as Rokurota's brother, attempt to escape so they can reconstruct their province, but ruthless enemy General Takayama Gyobu (Shiina Kippei) and his men are closing in on them from behind.
