The latest by Manda Kunitoshi, whose debut feature film, UNLOVED, was officially entered into the Critics' Week the Cannes International Film Festival in 2001 and won both the Oecume´nique future talent award and Rail d' Or. Similarly to UNLOVED, the screenplay for The Kiss was co-written by himself and Manda Tamami who is his partner both at work and in private.
Endo Kyoko (Koike Eiko) is a company employee in Tokyo. She leads a solitary life, keeping herself in her own shell. One day her attention is glued to the smiley face of a brutal murderer broadcasted on the TV screen. The man, Sakaguchi Akio (Toyokawa Etsushi), broke into a random house and savagely murdered the whole family. Kyoko feels in her bones that he had been through the same circumstances as she had. She visits him in prison, and the more does so, the more convinced she becomes of it, to the point that she marries him, a death-row convict. Sakaguchi had been completely reserved and only desired capital punishment, however, he becomes concerned about Kyoko's future. When he begins the appeal process on the advice of his lawyer (Nakamura Toru), Kyoko regards it as his betrayal of her. She kills Sakaguchi in the prison meeting room, and also turns the knife on the lawyer.
