[ Story ]
In 1918 in Hokkaido, an elderly man on his deathbed calls for his wife and eldest son, and begins to tell them the story of his life for the first time. His real name is Inoue Denzo, a key figure in the Chichibu rebellion of 1884, and he had fled to Hokkaido years ago to escape a death sentence. On November 1st of that year, 3,000 armed peasants had congregated at Muku Shrine in Chichibu near Tokyo, and urged others to join their struggle against exorbitant taxation and the conspiratorial confiscation of their lands and property by loan sharks and the government. This grassroots uprising, led by the Freedom and People's Rights Movement, was mercilessly crushed nine days later by army and police forces. The government subsequently decreed that 12 of the instigators, including Denzo, be executed while the other 3,000 were imprisoned and punished.
An independently produced historical epic, brought to the screen by director Kohyama Seijiro (A Single Drop of Water in a Mighty River, The Gujo Rebellion).
