Namiko (Tokiwa Takako) lives an affluent life in Manchuria with her sake-maker husband, Yutaro (Kagawa Teruyuki), but is unsatisfied by his staid ways. She reunites with former lover Osugi (Hotei Tomoyasu) only to see him sent away to fight the Russians; then she meets dashing young army intelligence officer Himuro (Iseya Yusuke) and embarks on a passionate, but brief affair. Namiko travels with her young children to meet her husband who is in Harbin on business, but the Soviets invade Manchuria and she witnesses the death of her husband and the defeat of the Japanese forces first hand. Himuro reappears but has fallen into the thrall of opium, and Namiko devotes herself to helping him overcome his addiction. He eventually succeeds and their love is rekindled, but ultimately Namiko decides to return to Japan with her children, leaving her beloved behind.
