[ Story ]
In 1923, Korean Kim Shun-pei (Beat Takeshi), leaves his home of Cheju for Osaka. A skilled processed fish worker, he at last succeeds in owning his own factory, but his obsession with money sees him become a ruthless loan shark. He marries fellow Korean, Lee Ei-hi (Suzuki Kyoka, winner of best actress at the 2005 Japan Academy Prize), taking in her daughter, Harumi, and producing two more children as they build a family together. However, Shun-pei is a heavy drinker and expresses himself primarily through violence while his family cowers in fear. They attempt to live their own lives despite his tyrannous rule, but when Ei-hi collapses from illness, her daughter hangs herself and dies. Shun-pei returns to Korea with his illegitimate son, Pak (Odagiri Jo), and passes away peacefully.
Ethnic Korean director Sai Yoichi (Doing Time, Quill) vividly depicts the struggles of a family in wartime and post-war Japan, anchored by a stunning performance from renowned filmmaker, Kitano.
