[ Story ]
A year after leprosy sufferers won a decisive victory in their lawsuit claiming years of unconstitutional treatment by the government, over 250 people still live in a sanatorium in Gunma's Kusatsu Town. One of the leaders of the movement to seek legal redress, Kodama Yuji, was a patient here. At present, he is working to turn the sanatorium into a comprehensive health and welfare center open to all comers. Asai Ai, a blind woman who, four years earlier, lost her husband of many years, begins written correspondences with a visually impaired boy who lives in Kanazawa. Suzuki Tokiji, a painter for over 50 years, is losing his eyesight, but continues to express his feelings for his deceased sister through his art. For decades these people have suffered the ignorance of the government and the world at large; forced isolation from society; discrimination and prejudice.
This documentary, made by Japan Academy of Moving Images student, Imada Satoshi, examines the tragic pasts of these former patients in light of the 2001 court verdict that admitted the state's wrongdoing in its policies toward them.
